Feeling the Heat? Here's How to Stay Cool This Summer

Let's be honest... we all love a bit of sunshine. Until it's 30°C, the fan is just moving hot air around the room, and even walking to the kettle feels like a workout.

Whether you're working, relaxing at home or making the most of the warmer weather, staying cool is about more than just comfort. Hot weather can leave us feeling tired, dehydrated and generally wondering why we ever complained about the rain.

Here are a few simple ways to beat the heat and enjoy summer safely.

💧 1. Drink More Water (Yes, Really!)

It sounds obvious, but it's also the one we're all guilty of forgetting.

Keep a bottle of water nearby and sip little and often throughout the day. If your drink has more ice than liquid by lunchtime, you're probably doing summer properly.

🕶️ 2. Avoid Becoming Best Friends with the Midday Sun

The sun is usually at its strongest between 11am and 3pm.

If you can, save the gardening, dog walk or "I'll just pop to the shops" mission for a little later in the day. Your future self will thank you.

👕 3. Dress for the Weather

Loose-fitting, lightweight clothing can make a huge difference when temperatures climb.

It might seem like common sense, but black jeans and a thick hoodie probably aren't the winning combination this week.

🏠 4. Keep Your Home Cool

Close your curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day and open your windows later in the evening when temperatures begin to drop.

If you have a fan, fantastic. If not, now might be the time to become very good friends with anyone who has air conditioning.

🍉 5. Eat Light and Stay Refreshed

Heavy meals can feel even heavier in hot weather.

Fresh fruit, salads, ice lollies and plenty of water-rich foods can help you feel refreshed throughout the day.

🧴 6. Don't Skip the Sunscreen

It might be tempting to think, "It's only the UK, I'll be fine!" but even on slightly cloudy days, UV rays can still be strong enough to damage your skin.

If you're spending time outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before heading out, and remember to reapply every two hours—or more often if you're swimming or working up a sweat.

👵 7. Check In on Those Around You

Hot weather can be particularly difficult for older adults, young children and anyone with underlying health conditions.

A quick phone call, message or visit to a friend, neighbour or family member can go a long way.

🌡️ 8. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Feeling dizzy, sick, unusually tired or developing a headache could all be signs that you've had a little too much sun.

Move somewhere cool, drink plenty of water and rest. If symptoms become severe or don't improve, seek medical advice.

😴 9. Don't Feel Guilty About Taking It Easy

Not every summer day has to be packed with activities.

Sometimes the best plan is finding a shady spot, putting your feet up and accepting that productivity can wait until the temperature drops a few degrees.

We spend most of the year wishing for warmer weather, so let's enjoy it!

Stay hydrated, wear your sunscreen, look after those around you and remember that there's absolutely no shame in eating an ice lolly before lunch when it's roasting outside.

From everyone at Willing Recruitment, we hope you have a safe, sunny and enjoyable summer!
